A week at DESY

Currently, I’m at DESY/Hamburg (German Electron Synchrotron) for a detector workshop, mainly for getting introduced to my master’s thesis topic. Within the next few years, new detector types will be developed. I’ll have a closer look at the so called Silicon Photomultiplier (SiPM). This roughly works like a solar cell, but can a be operated for detecting single photons. One area of application might be the Hadron Calorimeter for the CMS experiment at LHC/CERN.

Furthermore, we in Aachen always like to complain about our cafeteria. A lot. But what I experienced here was even less good, so to say. Maybe I’ll go to Mensa Vita again, probably since there’s no way around when working at the Physic’s Institute.
